Initiatives to create an inclusive workplace

To learn more about our clients and how they’re navigating diversity we spoke to Connor Wilson, who is now the founder of Pilot, a travel planner app. In this interview, he shares insights on what initiatives his previous company, Paystone has implemented to create an inclusive workplace.

What was the initiative(s) and how did you go about implementing it?

At Paystone we made one of our company values "Vibrant Community", which encourages people to be what we like to call "wonderfully weird" in their own ways. We encourage people to be their own individuals, and only hire people we think align with this value; people who are open-minded and accepting of other people who are different from them. We also put at the bottom of every job description that we are an inclusive workplace that doesn't discriminate on the basis of gender, religion, race, sexual orientation, etc. This serves to instill our values in those who apply, while warding away those who don't align with our values.

Can you share a challenge you encountered and what did you do to overcome it?

We found that we weren't getting enough good sales development candidates, and realized that we weren't getting many female candidates above a certain age range. In seeking to attract stay-at-home moms, who would be great at our roles, we posted part-time versions of the roles to be more inclusive of candidates who may not be able to commit to full-time. Additionally, some team members have children, and we allow them to work less to be able to manage this.

How did this positively impact your company?

This resulted in us hiring several high quality candidates who have been great for the company. This has also helped foster a community within the company where people feel accepted, supported, and cared about.
