Your new company

Our client is a well-established family office with a diverse portfolio that includes a significant residential and commercial real estate portfolio, along with a variety of other financial investments, such as securities, private equity etc. They are seeking an experienced Director of Accounting to lead their financial operations.

Your new role

Reporting to the Executive Vice President, your main responsibilities will include but aren’t limited to:

  • Financial Reporting and Compliance:
    • Oversee all financial reporting activities, ensuring accuracy and compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and relevant regulations.
    • Prepare financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements of various investments and operations.
    • Monitor financial performance and provide insights to senior management.
  • Investment Accounting:
    • Manage investment accounting processes, including valuation, reconciliation, and reporting for all financial investments and real estate holdings.
    • Collaborate with investment teams to ensure accurate recording of transactions and valuation adjustments.
  • People Management:
    • Lead and mentor a team of accounting professionals.
    • Ensure efficient workflow, performance evaluations, and professional development.
    • Foster a positive work environment and promote teamwork.
  • Curiosity and Forward Thinking:
    • Encourage a culture of curiosity and innovation within the accounting team.
    • Stay informed about industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices.
    • Proactively identify opportunities for process improvements and strategic initiatives.
  • Hands-On Approach:
    • Be actively involved in day-to-day accounting operations.
    • Roll up your sleeves to address complex accounting issues and provide practical solutions.
    • Lead by example and demonstrate a strong work ethic.
  • Analytical Skills:
    • Analyze financial data, identify patterns, and provide actionable insights.
    • Use data-driven decision-making to optimize financial processes and enhance performance.
  • Excellent Communication and Relationship Skills:
    • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including investment professionals, legal, and tax advisors.
    • Communicate financial results and recommendations clearly to senior management and stakeholders.
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with external partners and service providers.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and Canadian accounting principles.
  • Proficiency in financial software and tools (e.g., ERP systems, Excel, HOPEM).
  • Hold a valid CPA designation.
  • Bilingual (FR/EN) written and spoken (is an asset).
