Assistant Finance Manager in Ottawa South

Under the direction of the Manager of Finance, the Assistant Manager of Finance provides leadership and direction to the Finance and Payroll departments of the Board.

Your new role

Provide oversight and leadership to two operating areas with varying duties and focuses: Payroll and Finance. • Collaborate with the Finance team and Human Resources department along with the Payroll Officers to provide support for the functions and responsibilities of the payroll department. • Responsible for payroll forecasting, variance reporting to actual and providing bi-weekly updates to the Manager of Finance as to possible concerns • Responsible for Sick Leave Benefit Reporting (SBT) for financial year end and absence study purposes. • Assist in the preparation of the Board’s annual budget estimates, revised estimates, and annual financial statements in accordance with PSAB requirements including the understanding and application of the Grants for Student Needs and Responsive Education Programs (REP)grants. • Responsible for the completion and submission of the March 31st Consolidated Financial Report to the Ministry of Education. • Review department budgets. • Oversee Responsive Education Programs funding • Oversee the supervision of the day-to-day payroll and accounting activities and ensures they are performed in accordance with Board policies and procedures. • Develop, implement, monitor, and ensure compliance with internal controls for all accounting and purchasing processes, ensuring transactions comply with relevant legislation, Ministry protocols and Board policy and procedures. • Provide general assistance to senior staff, managers, and employees by researching, gathering, and analyzing financial data, producing reports, providing training and support and communicating to employees, schools and departments as necessary. • Participate in regular meetings of the Finance Committees of the Ontario Association of School Business Officials (OASBO). • Perform other duties as assigned, which are unplanned or of a transient nature and are consistent with the above job summary and duties

What you'll need to succeed

Five years related work experience in a computerized financial environment with two of those years in a leadership role • University degree in Commerce, Business Administration, or related field • CPA designation (previous CGA, CMA or CA) • Supervisory experience in a unionized environment • Superior interpersonal, communication, presentation, and negotiation skills, including commitment to client service • Excellent time management and organizational skills as well as ability to work under pressure • Thorough understanding of business processes in order to develop internal controls/procedures • Proficiency and experience with the application of GAAP and PSAB accounting standards • Advanced proficiency and knowledge in the use of financial and purchasing software applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, database, electronic mail and other relevant software applications • Demonstrated analytical, problem solving and conflict resolution skills
