Hays Specialist Recruitment is partnering with a leading organization in the marine and industrial sector, supporting a large unionized workforce. This is a contract opportunity to provide HR expertise and ensure smooth operations during a leave coverage period.


Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the HR team to implement best practices for attraction, retention, and development of employees.
  • Administer and maintain the
    Absence Management Program, ensuring compliance with federal, provincial, and company-specific leave policies (including STD, LTD, and personal leaves).
  • Assist in resolving conflicts and performance issues with union employees.
  • Support HR Business Partners with Respect in the Workplace investigations.
  • Provide interpretation of collective agreements when required.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to operations, offering guidance on complex HR challenges and employee relations.
Note: Approximately 80% of this role focuses on absence management.


What You Need to Succeed
  • 3–5 years of HR experience in a unionized environment.
  • Strong background in absence management and handling high-volume cases.
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Knowledge of HR best practices in recruitment, compensation, performance management, and conflict resolution.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to manage multiple stakeholders and sensitive information.
  • Familiarity with federal and provincial legislation (Canadian Human Rights Act, Employment Standards, Canada Labour Code, etc.).
  • Experience interpreting collective agreements and managing employee relations.
  • Oracle experience is an asset.
