Your New Role
Looking for a creative leader to develop and drive client’s search strategy. As a key leader on the Marketing Team, the
Director, SEO
will develop SEO Strategy to maintain and grow retail and ecommerce brand visibility in search engines through content, technical SEO, backlinking and conversion rate optimization.

What You Need to Do
SEO Strategy & Leadership
- Define and own global SEO strategy, spanning technical, on-page, off-page, local, international, and AI-driven SEO.
- Translate SEO initiatives into measurable KPIs (traffic, rankings, conversion, revenue contribution) and communicate results to stakeholders.
- Build, mentor, and scale a cross-border SEO team, embedding SEO into content, design, engineering, and analytics workflows.
- Act as the bridge between marketing strategy, engineering execution, and business performance outcomes.
Technical SEO & Infrastructure
- Architect crawl management, indexation control, robots.txt directives, sitemap management, canonicalization, hreflang, structured data, server-side rendering, and dynamic rendering.
- Conduct server log analysis to identify crawl inefficiencies, wasted budget, orphan pages, and bot access issues.
- Optimize rendering pipelines for JavaScript-heavy environments; collaborate with DevOps on SSR (server-side rendering) or dynamic rendering solutions where needed.
- Manage Core Web Vitals optimization across LCP, CLS, FID/INP leveraging CDNs, image compression, preloading strategies, critical CSS, lazy loading, and edge caching.
- Safeguard and optimize performance during migrations, replatforming, and headless commerce transformations (Shopify, Magento, WooCommerce/Wordpress & Others).
- Leverage enterprise SEO toolsets like Botify, OnCrawl, Screaming Frog, BrightEdge, Ahrefs, SEMrush to drive diagnostics and automation.
- Integrate SEO checks into CI/CD pipelines to ensure metadata, schema, and structured content remain intact at scale.
AI & Programmatic SEO
- Build programmatic SEO frameworks for category, location, and product pages using structured templates and dynamic keyword expansion.
- Leverage AI/ML models for: keyword clustering & topical gap detection, predictive ranking & anomaly detection, analytics, content automation, and internal linking optimization.
- Build AI-native solutions (chatbots, CMS workflows, prompt-engineered content systems) to accelerate acquisition and enhance customer journeys.
- Experiment with LLM-based query intent modeling to align content and SERP opportunities. Drive innovation in generative AI applications for content, UX, and personalization.
Emerging Search & Cross-Channel Integration
- Optimize for SERP features, rich snippets, visual search, voice assistants, and generative AI-powered search (SGE).
- Extend SEO strategy into video (YouTube, TikTok), app store optimization, and social discovery engines.
- Collaborate with Paid Search, CRM, and Affiliate teams to align organic with cross-channel attribution models and maximize ROI.
- Highlight organic SEO’s role in assisted conversions and customer lifetime value (LTV).
On-Page Optimization & Content
- Lead keyword research, semantic optimization, internal linking, and E-E-A-T strategy (Experience, Expertise, Authority, Trustworthiness).
- Oversee scalable optimization of title/meta frameworks, alt tags, schema, and URL architecture.
- Implement advanced schema (FAQ, HowTo, product, review, JSON-LD) to maximize SERP visibility.
- Partner with content and product teams to build compliant, high-intent content that balances education, discoverability, and conversion.
- Use A/B testing and engagement metrics to continuously refine content effectiveness.
Off-Page SEO & Authority - Design and lead a white-hat backlink acquisition strategy leveraging PR campaigns, partnerships, influencers, and niche publications.
- Monitor and maintain domain trust via toxic link audits, disavow management, and link velocity monitoring.
- Strengthen EEAT signals (authorship, citations, trusted partnerships) to build long-term domain authority globally.
Local & International SEO
- Manage global brand presence with geo-targeting, hreflang, localized content, subdomain vs ccTLD strategy.
- Manage Google Business Profiles, store locators, local citations, and local pack visibility for 200+ physical stores.
- Implement geo-targeting, align with international content strategies & compliance, and hreflang to support Canadian, U.S., and EU growth.
Analytics & Reporting
- Build advanced SEO observability dashboards combining GA4, GSC, Commerce platform, BigQuery, Looker Studio, SEMrush, Ahrefs, Botify, etc.
- Run log-level anomaly detection for crawl spikes, index drops, or algorithmic shifts.
- Create predictive traffic/revenue models tied to SERP features, keyword volatility, and competitor share of voice.
- Provide early warning systems for algorithm changes, ranking anomalies, and traffic volatility.
Governance & Education
- Establish SEO playbooks, checklists, SEO QA processes, and compliance frameworks across all brands.
- Train cross-functional teams on SEO technical and content standards.
- Ensure SEO compliance with SOX, PCI-DSS, GDPR, accessibility (WCAG 2.1), and cannabis-specific marketing restrictions.
- Standardize incident reporting protocols for SEO-impacting technical issues (downtime, platform changes, search engine penalties).
- Mitigate risks of algorithmic penalties and spam updates through proactive monitoring.
What You'll Need to Succeed:
- 8+ years in SEO, including all aspects of discipline
- Retail Industry experience is a must
- Proven record of delivering incremental results
- 2+ years managing teams
- Strong understanding of website and content architecture and tech stacks (Shopify, WooCommerce, MAGENTO, HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
- Proficient in key analytics, website and management tools including Google Analytics, Screaming Frog, SEMRUSH, AHREFS.
