Your new company

A leading home-building and land development company in Calgary has an immediate opening for an experienced Controller from a relevant industry background.

Your new role

You will be a key member of the accounting team, acting as a resource for the accounting department. You have exceptional accounting fundamentals and take pride in maintaining the highest standards of accuracy and completeness in financial records. You have a proven ability to independently investigate and resolve complex accounting issues.
You have a positive, professional attitude with strong attention to detail and can identify potential issues before they become problems. You know when to take initiative and when to seek guidance.
You are an expert in managing day-to-day accounting operations while maintaining the ability to analyze and contribute to strategic financial planning.
You are an organized, accomplished multi-tasker, with the ability to seamlessly switch from task to task while balancing ever-changing priorities and competing priorities, including strict deadlines.
You have strong interpersonal skills and are an effective, articulate communicator in both your written and verbal communications.
You will do what it takes to get the job done accurately and on time.

Financial Reporting & Analysis
  • Drive the month-end and quarter-end activities, ensuring complete and accurate financial records
  • Conduct detailed review of financial records, prepare account reconciliations to identify and resolve discrepancies
  • Post accruals and adjustments, reconcile G/L accounts and maintain working papers
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and reporting package, provided analysis of financial results
  • Analyse and review budget to actual results with managers, help managers understand results and underlying information
Budgeting & Forecasting
  • Lead annual operating budgeting cycle for home building
  • Providing periodic re-forecasts, as needed
  • Work closely with operations group to assist managers with understanding their budgets and the actual results
  • Financial modelling and analysis as needed
  • Forecasting revenue, overhead and net income for home building; advise executives on associated risks in the forecasts

Cash Flow Management
  • Prepare monthly divisional cash flow projections and advise of any risks to cash flow projections, whether to make loan draws or not. Make loan draws as needed
  • Prepare monthly reports for financing line including covenant and margin limit calculations
  • Prepare monthly draw reports for construction and lot financing
Project & Cost Management
  • Oversee project costing, including costs to complete analysis
  • Update and maintain project proformas and inventory schedules
  • Review and process purchase and sale transactions, statement of adjustments
Compliance & Tax
  • Maintain strong internal controls
  • Manage relationships with external auditors and prepare supporting documentation
  • Prepare GST returns and maintain related documentation
  • Review and sign-off on GST returns and GST New Housing Rebates etc.
  • Regulatory reporting & compliance – including but not limited to T4A, T5018 reporting, Statistics Canada reporting, vehicle taxable benefits etc.
  • Assist with external audit and prepare financial statements and notes, as needed
Team Leadership & Development
  • Supervise home building accounting staff
  • Act as a key resource and mentor for the accounting team
  • Provide technical accounting guidance to team members
  • Work closely with operational departments to ensure financial reporting meets users' needs
Strategic Support
  • Partner with the VP Finance and Director, Finance on strategic initiatives and special projects
  • Support special projects and analysis as needed for strategic decision-making
  • Liaise with banks, consultants, lawyers and auditors, as required
  • Other tasks as assigned

What you'll need to succeed

  • CPA designation with strong technical accounting skills
  • Minimum of 5 years of accounting industry experience
  • Demonstrated ability to independently investigate and resolve complex accounting issues
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Experience with project costing
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy
  • Strong analytical mindset with exceptional attention to detail
