Controller with construction industry knowledge and exposure to SAGE software
Your new company
This organization is a well‑established, owner‑operated construction contractor undergoing a systems and process refresh after a recent carve‑out and transition period. With a collaborative, hands‑on culture, the team is focused on standardizing construction accounting workflows, improving job costing accuracy, and tightening operational discipline across projects. Office is near Dixie & Derry on the west side of Pearson Airport, with onsite parking and public transit at the door.Your new role
This organization is hiring a Construction Controller to partner directly with ownership and rebuild our finance function. You’ll lead the accounting team, drive end‑to‑end construction accounting (including holdbacks, progress billing, job costing, and WIP), and consolidate Excel‑based processes into Sage 100 Contractor to achieve clean, timely reporting. The ideal candidate brings deep construction industry experience, systems improvement expertise, and the communication skills to align project managers with finance.Key Responsibilities
- Overhaul and standardize accounting systems, processes, and controls across AP/AR, payroll, billing, cash management, job costing, and month‑end close.
- Lead monthly invoicing and progress billings/holdbacks; ensure PM‑issued Excel invoices are reconciled to final client invoices and recorded accurately in Sage 100 Contractor.
- Improve BusyBusy → Excel → Sage 100 data flow to reduce manual touchpoints and errors; tighten revenue recognition and WIP reporting.
- Prepare financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet) and internal packages; deliver actual vs. budget project costing and margin analysis.
- Build a cohesive cadence with PMs and field operations; mentor a Senior Accountant and AP clerk; drive accountability and timeliness in all finance outputs.
- Maintain professional relationships with vendors, subcontractors, banks, and auditors; support special projects and continuous improvement.
What you'll need to succeed
- Construction industry accounting experience is essential (holdbacks, progress billing, statutory declarations, job costing/WIP).
- Sage 100 Contractor proficiency (or a closely related construction ERP); strong Excel for process design and control.
- Demonstrated success implementing and improving systems/processes in a contractor environment.
- Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management with a self‑starter mindset (“take the bull by the horns”).
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance; CPA preferred.
What you'll get in return
- Salary: approx. $120K (flexible; open to discuss for a standout profile).
- Schedule/Work Environment: Monday–Friday, in‑office; flexible start/finish times for life commitments. Onsite parking; public transit at the door.
- Benefits: Comprehensive union benefits plan (same package as trades); vacation 2–5 weeks depending on seniority/negotiation. (RRSP matching typically not offered; salary can be structured to offset.)
