Civil Engineering Assistant Project Manager

Your new company

This organization is a well-established, Canadian-owned organization that is responsible for the design and development of civil & infrastructure projects & recognized as one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies. With a strong presence across Ontario and major infrastructure projects nationwide, this organization offers a collaborative, values-driven environment focused on safety, quality, and long-term career growth. The organization is known for its accessible leadership, inclusive culture, and commitment to developing its people.

Your new role

This organization is seeking a Civil Engineering Assistant Project Manager (APM) to support a major heavy civil / hydro infrastructure project in Northern Ontario. Reporting directly to the Project Manager, the APM will play a key role in the design and day-to-day management financial tracking, scheduling, and risk management of the project. This role offers long-term project stability and exposure to technically challenging work with a focus on dam projects.

The position is site-based, with flexibility for candidates currently located outside the region through living-out allowance (LOA) or relocation support.

  • Support the Project Manager in delivering a complex heavy civil / hydro infrastructure project by contributing to engineering design coordination, early stage planning, and project documentation from pre-design through to construction & close-out.
  • Track project performance against schedule and budget by assisting with progress measurement, percent complete updates, cost-to-date monitoring, and forward-looking projections to ensure design and development milestones remain on track.
  • Help identify emerging design and technical risks (scope gaps, constructability issues, consultant delays, permitting constraints) and contribute to practical mitigation plans that maintain project continuity.
  • Assist with scope definition, design change management, and documentation, including preparing submissions and ensuring client and consultant approvals are secured before revised work proceeds.
  • Partner with internal teams and consultants to ensure drawings, specifications, and technical packages are aligned with project requirements and ready to support downstream construction activities.
  • Provide support for subcontract and supplier engagement, including onboarding, tracking design-related deliverables, monitoring document compliance, and assisting in aligning vendor outputs with design intent.
  • Contribute to commercial and administrative processes by supporting progress billings, assembling backup documentation, and assisting with outstanding information requests.
  • Promote a strong safety first culture by incorporating design for safety principles and supporting the implementation of safety requirements within project documentation and planning.
  • Support quality compliance by helping maintain organized records, tracking revisions, and ensuring all documentation adheres to the company’s Quality Assurance requirements.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Professional accreditation (P.Eng. or CET)
  • Willingness to work on project sites in Ontario; candidates located outside the region are encouraged to apply as the client can support relocation and/or provide a Living Out Allowance (LOA).
  • A post-secondary background in Civil Engineering or a related technical discipline (engineering degree, diploma, or equivalent practical training).
  • Proven experience supporting the delivery of large, complex projects beyond small maintenance / minor works.
  • Strong heavy civil / infrastructure engineering exposure, with relevance to structural concrete, hydro/power, water-related works, or similar project scopes (dam experience is a strong advantage but not a strict requirement).
  • Sufficient depth of experience to “step in and run with it” (typically 8+ years), though high-performing Senior Project Coordinators / developing APMs with the right project background will be considered.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to flag risks early and keep project teams aligned.
  • Solid working knowledge of AutoCAD and project management tools and reporting platforms (MS Office required; MS Project and Bluebeam preferred).

What you'll get in return

  • Competitive total compensation aligned to experience and project background.
  • A comprehensive benefits package with flexibility and strong coverage from the start.
  • Four (4) weeks of vacation.
  • Retirement savings support through a company program with employer contribution.
  • 24/7 access to virtual healthcare / telemedicine services.
  • Ongoing training, development, and career growth opportunities within an expanding Ontario operation.
  • Employee assistance resources and wellness initiatives supported by an active internal community.
  • Company-provided corporate apparel / clothing program.
  • Site/Location Support (Northern Ontario)
  • Living Out Allowance (LOA) is available for candidates based outside the project region, provided the role’s work schedule is maintained (full Monday–Friday coverage).
  • Relocation costs can be compensated for the right candidate, with flexibility depending on individual circumstances and project needs.
  • A genuine “open-door” environment – people at all levels are encouraged to share input and are heard, even early in their tenure.
  • Accessible leadership – the organization is large enough to deliver major work, but not so layered that you can’t connect directly with decision-makers.
  • A strong growth culture – a place where employees can build long-term careers as the business continues expanding in Ontario.
  • Supportive, tight-knit project teams – particularly on remote sites where colleagues tend to form a collaborative, community-style dynamic.
