The HR Business Partner will provide a full range of human resources client support services to a few business units or functions. They are the imbedded HR representative for their defined client group and have overall accountability for the delivery of HR Services to this defined group of employees. They contract internally within HR for support (from Centres of Excellence or Centres of Expertise). The incumbent of this position may be required to travel. Periods of high workload coinciding with regular annual HR cycles and potential involvement in collective bargaining.

Your new role

Strategic Partner
  • Crafts and recommends solutions to address chronic issues, challenges, or opportunities for their client group
  • Supports the processes established to identify talent and to grow the next generation of leaders
  • Brings stakeholder feedback, to support development of better practices in the areas of talent management and strategic HR management to the organization

Employee Mediator
  • Creates sustainable solutions to individual employee issues or risks; escalates as required and appropriately applies the established procedures and processes to address risk.
  • Identifies and anticipates risk for the organization related to employment or labour matters. Takes appropriate immediate action and escalates as prudent.
  • Is a credible third-party in the resolution of dispute.

Emergency Responder
  • Provides immediate solutions to acute or emergent issues when required within their scope of authority.
  • Provides guidance in a time of crisis and supports leadership in decision making.
  • Provides best practices in communication and crisis management to leaders.

Operations Manager
  • Measures and monitors existing policies and programs. Provides thoughtful analysis of the effectiveness of the programs and delvers timely feedback to COEs and/or through their reporting structure.
  • Using business acumen, experience and data makes recommendations to improve existing policies and programs
  • Tracks trends and communicates useable intelligence to leaders

Specific Functional areas of accountability include:
  • Talent Management
    • recruitment and retention – engage the HR Coordinators as process owners to achieve a superior level of service.
    • workforce and succession planning
    • employee development and training – engage the Training and Learning COE to ensure effective solutions for the client group.

    • diversity and inclusiveness
  • Compensation and Benefits application
    • wages, premiums, and allowances – monitor and apply the T&Cs within guidelines.
    • rewards and recognition
    • job evaluation for staff roles – Apply the HAYs process and monitor internal and external equity. Engage the Total Rewards COE to ensure effective service delivery to the client group.
    • market trending for compensation, benefits and other rewards
    • employee pay and time capture processes – Engage the Payroll COE to ensure effective delivery of service to the client group.
  • Organizational Effectiveness / Organizational Design
    • Identifies opportunities for organizational change that increases efficiency and effectiveness
    • Provides advice to leadership in the application of OE/OD principles to improve performance
    • Builds capability within the HR Team and the Leadership cohort in the area of OE/OD
  • Employee Engagement
    • Provide advice in the creation of internal communication to employees
    • Monitors trending employee sentiment and engagement
    • Provides advice regarding performance management practices and programs.
  • Monitors and identifies risk
    • Remain up-to-date regarding relevant legal changes and identify challenges within the client group. Provide advice to avoid risk.
    • Manage and resolve 3rd party complaints and grievances related to employment. Escalate as required in accordance with the relevant policies and procedures.
  • Employee and labour relations
    • Administration of Collective Agreements and employment contracts
    • Point of contact for local relationships with Unions
    • Continuous improvement, training of operational leaders.
    • Conducts investigations as required.
  • Employee pay and time capture
    • First point of escalation for the resolution of issues related to time capture and pay
    • Provide direction regarding the application of pay per Collective Agreements, employment contracts, and employment standards.

What you’ll need to succeed

  • Typically requires related post-secondary education along with 3-5 years’ experience providing advisory/consultative services as a Human Resources professional.
  • Strong project management skills
  • Previous experience with salary administration and job evaluation with Hay methodology would be preferred.
  • CPHR designation, or working towards, would be an asset.
  • Superior computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) are required.
  • A good knowledge of SMS Equipment policies and procedures.
