Ground Control Lead

A leading mining industry is looking to onboard a Ground Control Lead to join our Mines Technical Service team in Voisey’s Bay, NL. This permanent position is based at the Voisey’s Bay mine site in Labrador, a fly-in fly-out operation. This position is on a two week on, two week off rotation.

Your new role
The Ground Control Lead will coordinate ground control activities and provide technical support to the Ground Control Programs and Seismic Risk Management Plans at the mine site. The incumbent will ensure that health and safety standards and legislated requirements pertaining to Ground Control are effectively satisfied and support the integration of the long-range Ground Control and Seismic Risk Management Plans into the 3-24 month mine execution plan at the mine site. The role will collaborate closely with Mine Planners, Geology, Mine Operations, Mine Design Group, NA Rock Engineering Group, Ventilation and VBM Geotechnical Group.

In this position, you will:
  • Lead geo-mechanical risk assessment of "Life of Mine (LOM) Plans" and annual mine execution plans at the mine site
  • Collaborate with Mine Operations and Mine Planning for alignment on the 0–24-month Ground Control and Seismic Risk Management Plan and execution of that plan
  • Develop and manage site-specific ground support design/standards and ground support quality control programs to ensure ground stability
  • Lead technical investigations of major ground instability incidents to prevent re-occurrence at the specific mine site and participate in similar technical reviews at multiple mine sites
  • Lead and develop site specific field instrumentation programs, including the micro seismic system upgrades, to monitor ground behavior with the progress of mining
  • Participate in Vale-required ground control/rock engineering audits and reviews (i.e. Seismic Review Board (SRB), HIRA and Integrated Operations Assessment (IOA)) and develop action plans to address recommendations
  • Maintain regular routine communication with MTS, Mine Operations and JHSC to provide guidance, updates and coordination on Ground Control issues and initiatives
  • Support Base Metal FELs studies by providing data, document, and design reviews
  • Provide training and mentoring to foster skills and proficiencies of the Ground Control team.

What you'll need to succeed
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering
  • Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Mining Engineering, specializing in Rock Mechanics/Geotechnical Engineering would be considered an asset.
  • Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) designation is required.
  • A minimum of 8-10 years of Geotechnical Engineering and/or underground mining experience is required.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work closely with several departments, including Operations, Environment, Mines Technical Service Department and Project team.
  • Geomechanical numerical modeling and ground control instrumentation knowledge would be an asset.
  • Sound understanding of ground control software applications – Map3D, RocScience, etc.
