Maintaining a work-life balance while working from home

Most of us have been working from home for a few weeks now and are starting to get into the flow of a new routine. As you are adapting to this new normal and creating your work schedules, it is important to remember to make time for yourself to keep a work-life balance. Here are some activities you can participate in on your free time to have a work-life balance – even while working from home.

1. Sign up for a language class

As the world continue to become more globalized, being bilingual can be a highly desirable skill by prospective employers and can also help you throughout your career. There are a variety of companies that offer online language classes like Berlitz. These classes can be held a few times a week and you have the ability to choose between private lessons or group sessions. You can also register for a time and level that is suitable for you – beginner, intermediate or advance. There are even apps like Duolingo that you can download straight on your phone or tablet. Learning a language this way can be effective because it adapts to your learning style and provides personalized exercises. Additionally, it incorporates gamification to keep you entertained and motivate along your new language journey.

2. Create a global playlist

There are many different ways to listen to music now and apps like Spotify and Apple music make it even easier. We now have access to an abundance of genres and artists all at our fingertips. You can use streaming service to create personalized playlists filled with your top tunes. Try getting out of your comfort zone and search for music in different languages – you might find a sound that you’ve never heard before and really like. Explore French, Spanish or maybe Italian, there are many great artists and genres out there waiting to be discovered. Whether you take a cleaning break or are preparing your lunch, there is always a song that can accompany you to help brighten your day.

3. Join an online concert

Ever wondered what it would be like to have a private concert in your living room? Now’s your chance to view live performances by artists that you might not have gotten to see before. Many artist are now holding live concerts through streaming channels like Instagram live. Some artists who have done performances already include Chris Martin, Code Orange, Sech and Yungblud. Keep your finger on the pulse because your favourite artist might be putting on an online concert brought to you right in the comfort of your own home. Get cozy and enjoy a set from D-Nice or be serenaded by John legend all while in your pajamas.

4. Sing karaoke with friends

After dinner consider hopping on Smule to sing karaoke with your friends or up the stakes and show off your singing skills to strangers and the occasional pet. Smule is an app that gives you access to millions of karaoke songs to choose from in a variety of languages. You can sing in a duet, groups or if you’re more of a solo act they have that option too.

5. Plug into a Netflix party

Watch movies and shows with friends and family in a whole new way with Netflix party. This free Google Chrome extension allows you to link up with your loved ones without having to leave your home. Select a show/movie of your choice and watch together while sending messages through a group chat. Follow the simple steps here to learn how to create your own Netflix party – this just brought a whole new meaning to movie nights.

6. Take an online dance class

Dancing is a great way to stay active while having fun. There are multiple professional dancers who are hosting live dance lessons, giving you the opportunity to learn straight from them for free. Did you miss the live lesson? Check out YouTube for a variety of online tutorials for all levels, taught by pro dancers that will surely get you grooving. Pick a style you like, push aside your coffee table and learn a new routine right in your living room.

7. Do a workout at home

You don’t need a gym to have a good workout, you can burn calories right at home. There are workouts available for you to follow at home that will have you breaking a sweat. The Nike Training Club app has workouts designed by Nike trainers that you can download to your phone. Enjoy a library of workouts ranging from 15 – 45 minuets that can target the areas you want to improve. Looking for a Yoga workout? Continue your yoga journey at home with YogaWorks. They are providing free live classes where you can follow along, check out their schedule of classes here. Is Zumba more your style? Zumba class on YouTube has a variety of dance workouts that you can choose from. This is a great way to get your heart pumping and your hips moving.
