This year, Hays turns 50. It's the people that make Hays great so we're talking to our valued veterans. Vancouver Business Director Russell Carnley looks back on 16 years with Hays, including helping establish the Vancouver office in 2004.
How did you start with Hays and how has your career progressed?
I started with Hays immediately after graduating from Nottingham Trent University initially working in the East Midlands Construction & Property business. After a couple of years working in the UK the decision was made to expand the Canadian business and I was given the opportunity to be part of the team to establish the Vancouver office. Vancouver had just won the bid to host the 2010 Olympics so it was a great time to arrive here and be involved. Since that time we have grown a very successful office here in Vancouver and our Construction & Property team has been a large part of that success.
How has recruitment changed since you started?
The market has changed considerably since I started in Vancouver. When we first established the office many prospective clients weren’t utilizing external search at all and it was a case of educating them about who Hays are, but also how we add value in helping them achieve their own business objectives. It was fun to be involved with a startup business and I am really proud to have been a part of establishing the Hays brand in Western Canada.
What makes Hays a great place for you to build your long-term career?
Hays is a dynamic business that takes pride in developing their own leaders and promoting from within. I have worked for the company for 15 years and I still receive training and feel I am learning.
What do you think has helped make Hays successful over 50 years?
The recruitment landscape is ever changing but Hays is at the forefront of this change. As an organization we are massive advocates of technology. The company is always investing in new technology to ensure our consultants have a competitive advantage in the marketplace. We do lots of fun things both in the office and outside, and the company really embraces a sociable, team-oriented environment which I really enjoy.
