The skilled trades shortage means Canadian millwrights, heavy duty mechanics and electricians, and other skilled tradespeople have many opportunities available to them. Are you weighing up your options, or just going with the highest compensation?
From forestry and natural resources, to construction and manufacturing – you can build a trades career in almost any industry. Take some time to consider which is the right fit for you.
Manufacturing remains steady in Canada, with some manufacturers being helped by the cheaper Canadian dollar, while those who import raw material are challenged by their reduced buying power.
What are the benefits of manufacturing as a career?
Based in larger centres
If you’re hoping to live in a city, manufacturing could be the best option.
Multiple employers in one area
For example, there are multiple food processing manufacturers in lower mainland BC, so you have the option of choosing the employer that’s the right fit for you.
Relocation less likely
If you’re looking for stability, manufacturing could be the right place for you as you’re less likely to have to move multiple times in your career.
Compensation is often slightly lower, and living in a city can mean higher living costs. Benefits are comparable. Depending on your personal goals, the benefits could be downsides – maybe you’re looking for a rural lifestyle, or you’re excited by relocation.
