Job seeking will continue to evolve with the advancements of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation. These technologies are changing the way recruiters search for talent and conduct interviews. According to our 2019 Canada Salary Guide, 83 per cent of companies intend to adopt AI, machine learning or automation tools in the next 1–3 years to streamline their hiring and onboarding. How can job seekers rise to the challenge? Here are ten top tips to help you land your dream job this year.
1. Sign up for job alerts
Rather than spending hours online searching for job postings, you can discover new opportunities by signing up for job alerts on LinkedIn, Glassdoor and other career sites. You’ll receive a notification as soon as a job that meets your criteria opens up. Not only will you save time, applying right away also increases your chance of getting noticed by a recruiter.
2. Tailor your resume to the job description
Hiring managers are using AI and automated resume screening to eliminate candidates that don’t meet the job requirements. Thereby, your resume should highlight your most relevant skills and experiences and include keywords in the job description such as “data analysis” and “project management.” However, this doesn’t entail modifying your resume each time you apply—job descriptions overlap. Find out which common skills and experiences are needed for the type of role you’re interested in to help you create a solid resume.
3. Communicate professionally, even with a chatbot

You can begin to assess the company’s culture by looking at the company’s reviews online as well as looking through the company’s career site and social media page. 7. Get your resume mobile ready
Job opportunities can appear unexpectedly—even while you’re browsing on your smartphone. Ensure your resume is accessible from all your devices so you can apply for roles anytime, anyplace, and anywhere. Your resume should also be mobile friendly. This includes avoiding the use of columns so it fits in the pane of the phone, including hyperlinks to your email address and phone number, and having the most relevant information at the top.
8. Build and maintain your professional relationships
Although AI and similar technologies are transforming the hiring process, people, not machines, will continue to play the dominant role in hiring and staff engagement. It’s important to build and nurture your professional relationships both online and in person. Some ways to meet and connect with people include attending networking and meetup events, arranging networking coffee dates, and using mentoring platforms such as Ten Thousand Coffees.
9. Update your skills
One of the main challenges for employers is to find skilled candidates. According to the 2019 Hays Salary Guides, 78 per cent of US employers report being affected by the skills shortage, whereas in Canada that number is as high as 82 per cent. 10. Go above and beyond
If you want to really impress employers, go beyond the call of duty. This doesn’t mean having a flashy resume or boasting all your achievements. For example, create a prototype or a presentation that highlights your skills and provides a solution to a real problem.
