Interview with Taryn Beber - International Women's DayFor International Women's Day, we are featuring stories from some of the successful women we have in Hays here in Canada. Sharing their story with Hays and expertise, they give their career insights and advice.

From Toronto, here is what Taryn Beber, Senior Manager – Flex Professionals, has to share about the career she built with Hays.

What was your progression into your leadership role with Hays?
I started with Hays 6 years ago as a 360 recruiter in the contract team in the Toronto office. As the team grew, so did my position and leadership within. I started managing the Office Professionals team and since then have grown to manage all Flex Professionals that are not within the IT sector.

Did you always aspire to reach a leadership role in your career?
Absolutely. Throughout my schooling, I noticed that in school projects or during sports I would always naturally take the lead to make a plan. When I started at Hays and realized the growth opportunity, I instantly wanted to go down the management path. There is nothing more rewarding than assisting your team to grow!
Have you encountered any gender-specific challenges or obstacles in your career?
At Hays, we have such a strong Senior Leadership team full of women! I have had both male and female bosses here and at no point did I ever feel that there was anything stopping me to build the path I have chosen to go down.

How can women help women? Can you share any success stories?
Women can empower each other to reach their top potential by cheering each other on, pushing each other further, and speaking out for one another. I don’t have any individual success stories as I feel that Hays culture really prides itself on equality. My team is mixed with females and males, our board is mixed as well. Having the support of both genders is a success in my books.

Women are more likely to than men to say they left their last employer because of company culture. What cultural changes or initiatives can employers make to better retain their female workforce? What have you seen work during your career?
I have seen a lot of success with flexibility. A lot of companies are a lot more flexible with working from home and working different hours outside of the standard. A lot of women are juggling family and career and they want to be able to do both so they look for environments that allow them for this.

What is your advice for female professionals who are starting out their career and want to reach a leadership role?
Just do it! There is nothing stopping you. You should strive to reach your strongest potential. Set yourselves goals, achieve them and set some more. Lead by example, lead by activity and lead by your passion!
