The new year is just around the corner which makes a lot of people consider what they want for their career in the coming year. You might be thinking “Should I ask for a raise?” or “Is it time to look for a new job?” If you are, then make sure you’re aware of what the job market looks like.
In terms of hiring trends, it’s worth knowing that about a third of employers across Canada are planning to increase their permanent staff in the next year, but this trend differs from province to province. For example, British Columbia is one of the strongest regions for hiring in the country. This doesn’t mean that if you’re outside of BC you should be discouraged from making plans, but rather that you should be aware of what the hiring market looks like in your region, and expertise, to make realistic goals.
Additionally, when considering looking for a new position it may be a good idea to look at contract positions rather than searching solely for permanent roles. Half of Canadian employers are planning to hire contract workers in the coming year which you could use to your advantage to grow your experience in a shorter period.
To further guide you in your career planning process, you can find more details on the hiring trends in your expertise and region in the Hays 2017 Salary Guide which will be released in January.
