Are you hiring for immediate need, and overlooking the long-term consequences? With hiring pressure at an all-time high, it’s understandable to want to make a fast hire and fill an empty seat. However, the time and investment to hire someone new from hiring process to training makes it worth taking more time early on, to make sure the proper candidate is chosen.
Our recently launched “Fit” report, based on a poll of 1500 Canadians, shows that 58% of employers hired someone they knew wasn’t a good fit with their team, office culture or themselves. But why is “fit” so important as long as they get their work done?
Actually, they don’t get their work done, and it shows across the team - 75% of hiring managers polled indicated that it decreased office morale and 64% say poor fit created a decrease in work productivity.
But here’s the challenge…
How can you find out if someone is the right “fit” for your organization? Fortunately, there is already a method in place, you just have to learn to make the most of it – interviews.
Some organizations have found an interviewing system that provides a better insight on how a candidate would fit with the company. Dell Senior Manager of Global Candidate Attraction, Engagement and Experience, Jennifer Newbill and her team started with Dell’s core leadership principles and went from there:
“Using those core principles as a basis for our questions and dialogue with applicants helps our hiring leaders better determine if someone is a “fit” within our environment. This is accomplished through a competency based interviewing model where we interview based on our core principals asking our candidates for specific behavioural examples.” – Jennifer Newbill
Of the employers polled we found that 79% of them had indicated that hiring a candidate with a poor fit cost them at least $10,000 so the time and effort Jennifer and her team put in to reorganizing Dell’s interview process is worth the investment.
