Are you putting city limits on your career growth?

Estimators: Move out of your own wayAs an estimator you’re in high demand across Canada, but could you accelerate your career with just one change to your expectations?

A small increase in commute could mean a big increase in career growth.

There’s high demand for estimators with three to five years of experience, and it might seem like you can be discerning about job offers, without hindering your career. However, a trend towards working close to home is limiting some career growth options for top job-seekers, especially in Ontario.

Most construction contractors only have one office per province, so if you want different opportunities you might need to drive a bit further to find them.

Geographical flexibility, even within your region or province, will open up more career growth opportunities because you’ll have access to construction employers who are doing different types and sizes of projects.

Earn more money
By focusing only on your own city you could be missing out on jobs with a higher base salary, better benefits, or fewer perks. An employer one city over might even offer you a fuel or car allowance, meaning a longer commute would cost you less.

Learn new things
You can target your applications to roles that will give you specific learning experiences. Whether you want to use the latest technology, need more experience on a certain type of project, or want to work for a company that offers the right training, looking for the best job instead of the closest location will accelerate your career.

Work on bigger or different projects
Variety is what keeps you interested and engaged in your work. The company that is bidding on bigger projects or trialing new materials could expand your understanding, and your career.

Top tip:
Don’t limit your job search by city. Search by province, and keep a map open to see where you can maximize your career within a driving distance that fits your lifestyle.
