Canada’s construction market continues to be competitive, from hiring to finding your next career. As the economy continues to change, and businesses focus on the bottom line, the career path and employers plans for hiring are changing, responding to the market.
What does this mean for your industry and your career?
The Hays DNA of a VP of Construction finds that developing the right hard and soft skills are necessary for early success, but as you progress in the industry leadership skills become crucial - as does building the right team. Becoming a leader is more than just being promoted into the position. Invest in your own people management skills with training and coaching based on feedback from your peers and direct reports. Having a mentor who can guide you through the industry and help you make better decisions can be the deciding factor in career success.
Once you're in a leadership role, getting the right people on your team is key to your company's success. Hire for the right skills - including "soft" skills such as relationship management and strategic planning abilities. Just finding someone with the right technical abilities won't be as effective for driving results.
