Three ways to become an in-demand candidate

Posted by Rowan O'Grady, Hays Canada President on Wednesday, Apr 22, 2015

Toronto admin pictureOffice professionals do much more than the traditional filing and typing of 20 years ago. From data management to sales reporting, managing budgets to knowledge transfer - the expanded job description also means increased opportunities for career growth.

In honour of Administrative Professionals Day today, we look at how today's office professional can increase their career options and make the most of market demand.

According to the Hays 2015 Salary Guide, about a quarter of employers intend to hire office professionals this year. Bilingual candidates are especially in demand, as well as those with security clearance. For candidates looking to increase their market value, there are a few ways to become the candidate employers are hunting for.

1. Learn a new skill

Candidates with hybrid skill sets are especially in demand, so consider adding to your repertoire, whether it's learning to use Adobe Creative Suite or improving your Microsoft Office skills.

2. Expand your experience

Talk to your manager about taking on stretch assignments, and look for opportunities outside work to practice new skills such as event planning or social media management.

3. Know your industry

Some industries have more demand for skilled office professionals than others. For example, candidates with property or legal experience are especially sought after. Look at areas of high demand and be strategic about how you can get experience in those sectors or industries.

Almost a third (29%) of respondents said they were planning to use temporary workers to meet productivity requirements, with specific demand for those with three to five years of experience so if you're interested in the flexibility offered by working on a contract or temporary basis there are lots of opportunities for those at the intermediate level.
